SUPPORT

BackupSafe Support

Guidance for preparing a verified backup and connecting the nearby iPhone companion.

Supported systems

BackupSafe requires an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 12 or later. The iPhone companion requires iOS 15 or later, and Live Activities require iOS 16.1 or later. Enable Bluetooth on both devices for companion status.

Before starting a backup

  • Confirm that the source and every destination use different physical media.
  • Confirm in Finder that the source is readable and each destination is writable.
  • Make sure free space on every destination exceeds the complete source size.
  • Connect the Mac to power and prevent scheduled sleep or shutdown.
  • Keep at least two verified copies on separate media for important data.

File and folder access

BackupSafe runs in the App Sandbox and can access only locations you select. If permission is revoked or a device path changes, select the source or destination again in the app.

BackupSafe does not modify source files. It writes a temporary destination file and promotes it to the final name only after successful read-back verification.

Attention or failure states

BackupSafe does not report success for the same media or nested paths, existing destination conflicts, insufficient capacity, missing permission, a changed source, a checksum mismatch, unsafe names or paths, storage removal, or unexpected termination.

Review the item in the Mac app, resolve the cause, and prepare a resumable job from History when available. A .backupsafe-partial file is not a verified backup.

Connecting the iPhone companion

The companion reads nearby BLE status; it is not an internet push service. Updates may be delayed when the Mac is out of range or iOS limits background execution. Check detailed errors and file-level results on the Mac.

  • Enable nearby pairing in the Mac app.
  • Choose Add Nearby Mac on iPhone.
  • Compare the six-digit code shown independently on both devices.
  • Confirm on iPhone only when every digit matches.
  • Allow Bluetooth and notification permissions on iPhone.

Reports

Depending on settings, a job can create PDF, CSV, JSON, and ASC MHL records. A report file by itself is not evidence of success; confirm that the job state is Verified Complete.

When contacting support

Do not attach original media. Send the app version, macOS or iOS version, device model, filesystem types, displayed state and error text, and approximate time. Remove project names and full paths from reports or screenshots before attaching them.
